Clarke County
 |
Situated between two major waterways, the Alabama River and the Tombigbee River, Clarke County has a long and proud heritage of working with the natural resources with which it has been provided. The rich soil and fertile river basin have produced an environment that is extremely conducive for the growth and harvesting of many crops, but it is primarily the trees on which the county's timber | industry so strongly depends. In fact, nearly every job held by the county's 27,000 residents relies on the timber industry in some form or fashion.
Because of its concern for the preservation of the local ecosystem and its managed forestry program, the county contains an abundance of wildlife ranging from catfish and bass in its rivers to turkey and deer in the woodland areas. And, thanks to an intensive wildlife conservation program, visitors to this area are sometimes fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the rare bald eagle.
