Escambia County

Atmore Rail Welcome Center - photo courtesy Escambia County IDA Reflecting the district's continuing diversity, Escambia County offers a unique perspective on life, combining glimpses back to old-fashioned values with an eye ahead to the promises of the future. The Atmore City school system, for instance, has made a priority of training every child from grades K-12 in the use of computers and computer operating systems. At the same time, the
public library still offers courses for these young people in areas of etiquette - "White Gloves and Party Manner" for the ladies, and "Stand Up and Shake Hands" for the gentlemen.

The Creek Indians played a significant role in the history and development of the county, and a large percentage of the population of Atmore is directly descended from that tribe. The
Poarch Band of Creek Indians each year holds its Thanksgiving Day Pow-Wow to celebrate this rich cultural heritage and often has more than 20,000 people attend.

As with all areas in the district, agriculture plays an important role in the economic success of Escambia County, and the climate in this area has led to the successful cultivation of many important crops. Industry has also played an important role in the development of the county, and in recent years several businesses have relocated to this area primarily because of accessible rail and interstate highway routes, as well as the low cost of living and the quality of the available workforce.
