Mae Stimpson of St. Paul’s Episcopal School Wins First Place
WASHINGTON—U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner (R-AL) today announced Mae Stimpson of St. Paul’s Episcopal School as the winner of this year’s First Congressional District High School Art Competition: An Artistic Discovery. Created in 1982, the nationwide art competition has spotlighted the talents of thousands of young artists for almost three decades.
Stimpson, a student of art instructor Beth Compton, was awarded first-place honors for the entry, “Broken Dreams.” In addition to this award, Stimpson is also eligible to receive a $5,000 annual art and design scholarship and roundtrip airfare for herself and a guardian in support of her attendance at the opening of the exhibition in Washington, D.C. Stimpson’s artwork, along with the other winning entries, will be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol building.
“This year’s competition attracted some very talented young artists from southwest Alabama,” Bonner said today. “I am so pleased to participate in a competition that encourages students to develop their creativity and share their gifts with the community. It is truly an honor for the winning artists to have their work showcased in the Capitol, and I commend the Mobile Museum of Art for their continued support of this competition.”
A reception honoring all of this year’s winners and their families will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at 3:30 p.m. at the Mobile Museum of Art. Bonner will be on hand to congratulate all of the entrants and to present awards to the winners.
